Epping, NH – All-Star Speedway hosted the first big event of the
2008 season on Saturday night, with the WaterSnoGo Modified
Showdown 150 presented by Laticrete took center stage.
Many of the top names in the Modified business were in the pits
for the first round of the four-race All-Star Modified Showdown,
with Ted Christopher, Mike Stefanik, Jimmy Blewett, Bobby Grigas,
Ronnie Silk and a host of other big names looking to take home
the big bucks.
Last year’s race winner, Rob Summers, was knocked out of action
during practice, when he made hard contact with the turn three
wall to end his day with a racer that was too heavily damaged to
repair.
Andy Seuss got out of shape and drilled the frontstretch wall a
bit later, putting his crew to work making repairs. But his
night turned out a whole lot better than Summers’, as the crew
got him back in action.
A trio of qualifying heats started out the night’s action, and
it was Matt Hirschman, Jimmy Kuhn and Louie Mechalides taking
down the wins. Tony Ricci held of a persistent Jon McKennedy to
pick up the win in the consolation round.
When the 30-car field thundered to the green flag, there was
some hot action throughout the field, but the early laps saw
both Jim Storace and Christopher headed to the pits for good on
lap 13.
By that point, Louie Mechalides had moved to the front of the
pack, and he stayed there for nearly 50 laps. Matt Hirschman
took over the point from there, and Mechalides got tangled with
a lapped car on lap 66 to knock him from contention.
Mike Stefanik followed Hirschman to the front, and he soon moved
in to challenge for the lead. At halfway, it was Hirschman,
Stefanik, Kuhn, Seuss and Ronnie Silk sitting in the top five.
Hirschman held on to the point for another 35 laps, but Stefanik
took over from there.
Seuss was running like a man possessed however, slicing his way
up through the field after starting 25th on the grid. He got to
Stefanik’s back bumper at the white flag, but Stefanik held on
to score the win, and Seuss had to settle for runner-up honors.
Silk was scored with a third place finish for his efforts,
followed by Tommy Cravenho, Jon McKennedy, Chris Pasteryak,
Hirschman, Kuhn, Jim Boniface and Eric Beers filling out the top
ten
All-Star’s Super Streets were out in full force for the night’s
action, with John Bourdelais and Tony Carroll leading the field
down to Mike Walker’s green flag. Bourdelais moved immediately
to the lead, with Carroll and Randy Tetreault in hot pursuit.
Opening night winner George Baldwin was quickly on the move,
busting out of the pack to run down the leaders. Bourdelais and
Tetreault were battling hard for the top spot, and the two got
together, with Baldwin making a three-wide move to take over the
lead.
Tetreault and Bourdelais both headed to the pits with tires
down, while Baldwin took control and cruised on to pick up his
second win of the year. Carroll came across the stripe with a
strong runner-up finish, and it was Tetreault, Chuck Dehney, and
Russ Douphinette rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth
were Sandy Lee, Rob DeAlmeida, Lee Weldy, Bourdelais and Shaun
Waites, Sr.
Stephen Dubois and Gary Beauregard brought the Strictly Stocks
around to the start, with Dubois keeping the lead for just a lap
before Beauregard got past. Rick Woodside, Jr. quickly joined
the lead battle, knocking Dubois back a spot when he took over
second.
At halfway, it was Beauregard and Woodside still leading the
way, but opening night winner Steve Douphinette was coming, and
coming fast. He ducked under Woodside to take second just after
the crossed flags, and on lap 16, he made his move on
Beauregard.
Douphinette took the lead and went on to post the win, with
Beauregard taking home runner-up honors. Woodside held on to
post a third place finish, with Paul Ranberg, Ken McIlvaine,
Mike Asselin, Dubois, Jared Mountain, Corrie Merritt and Mike
Williams the rest of the top ten.
Fast 8 action saw 2007 Howler winner Brian DeStefano taking down
the win over Christin Burns and Jeff Wheeler, while Shaun Waites,
Jr. made it two in a row in the Fast 4’s over Billy Osborne,
Timmy Johnson, Jim Deveau, and Jeff James.

Drivers Fill Field at All-Star LATICRETE Modified Thunder 150
EPPING, NH- The pavement Modified division experienced a boom in
popularity in the 1970’s, largely because of events known as
“Open Shows”. They offered competitors who raced at numerous
home tracks a chance to compete against each other for a purse
larger than their normal weekly payout. These events were fun
and memorable for both fans and competitors alike. In the
parking lot, license plates proved the interest was widespread.
Touring series events, with points, and strict rules have
largely taken over the racing scene as of late, with open shows
becoming small in numbers. All-Star Speedway and it’s new owner
Bobby MacArthur are aiming to put the “Open Show” back on the
map, with a four race series in 2008 titled the ‘WaterSnoGo
All-Star Modified Showdown’
MacArthur stated, “Last year’s event was a starting point. The
quality of the racing was so good by bringing teams from all
over the east together at All-Star Speedway that I decided to
make it a four race series paying big money to win, and a large
point fund. We learned last year that All-Star is most suitable
for this type of an event. With the help of sponsorship from
WaterSnoGo and LATICRETE, we were able to make it happen.”
The first of those events takes place on May 10, with the
running of the 2nd Annual LATICRETE Modified Thunder 150. The
race will pay $5,000 to win, plus lap money and bonuses. With
caution laps not counting, it will truly be a 150-lap race.
There will be a halfway break to allow teams to make adjustments
and change two tires if desired. These two factors alone make it
a Modified race like no other.
The race payoff, plus an additional $20,000 in point fund money,
has generated interest from competitors across the Modified map.
The top five finishers from the 2007 event will all be returning
for this race. Rob Summers, Jon McKennedy, Andy Seuss, Ronnie
Silk and Chris Pasteryak will each be looking for another good
finish.
In addition to that, several drivers and teams will be competing
for the first time ever at All-Star. Jimmy Blewett, Eric Beers,
James Civali, and Danny Sammons head the list of confirmed
entrants that have never even seen All-Star Speedway.
Blewett admitted, “I’ve never been to All-Star, but I heard that
everybody liked the race last year. I’m definitely looking
forward to it. If you just run the tour it’s the same thing week
in and week out. It’s nice to do something a little bit
different. It’s no pressure, but we’re going there to win.”
Add to that Ted Christopher, who earned more money with a
sixteenth place finish in the 2007 All-Star event than he was
given for winning a recent touring series event. The winner of
the All-Star Nationals last fall, Matt Hirschman is also
entered.
Among other drivers stating their intentions to compete are
Three-Time TVMRS Champion Kirk Alexander, Mike Stefanik, Ryan
Preece, Bobby Grigas, Louie Mechalides, Jimmy Kuhn, Ken Barry
and Tommy Cravenho to name a few.
Guaranteed starters for the race are Chuck Hossfeld, David
Pinkham and Mechalides as point leaders of the NASCAR Whelen,
True Value, and NASCAR All-Star weekly Modified standings
respectively.
Four heat races prior to the LATICRETE 150 will be lined up by
the luck of the draw, running 15 laps in length. One or two
consolation races and a B-Main to determine the balance of the
field are also on the schedule.
With no other Modified Touring Series events scheduled this
weekend, the number of entries are expected to double in
comparison to the 2007 event.
This Saturday night at 6:00 PM it’s the return of the “Open
Modified Show”. It’s a format that made Modified racing in the
northeast one of the most popular forms of motorsports, with
Geoff Bodine and Richie Evans among the past open show winners
at All-Star Speedway in the 1970’s.
The LATICRETE 150, as part of the $20,000 WaterSnoGo All-Star
Modified Showdown Series is sure to bring new memories to
pavement Modified enthusiasts that could last a lifetime. Racing
begins at 6:00 PM this Saturday night.

Epping, NH – All-Star Speedway opened up the 2008 NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series championship season on Saturday night, and
it was local favorite Louie Mechalides of Tyngsboro, MA taking
down the opening night win in the All-Star Modifieds.
When the 40-lap main event rolled out onto the high banks,
Mechalides shared the front row with fellow heat winner Luke
Royea, but not for long. After a few cautions slowed the pace in
the early laps, Mechalides moved to the front, while Bill
Clement, Matt Riley, Eric LeClair and Royea were all on the
sidelines.
While Mechalides was having it easy out front, there was a great
battle for position behind, with Jim Storace, Josh Cantara, Mike
Murphy and Jimmy Kuhn swapping spots lap after lap. Out front
meanwhile, Mechalides was in control, and he rolled the Marco
Turcotte machine into victory lane at the end of the night.
Kuhn came on strong in the late going the finish second to
Mechalides, while Cantara made the best of his debut to claim
third at the checkers ahead of former Strictly Stock champ
Murphy’s debut aboard the Ken Giles machine, and Jim Storace,
who rounded out the top five.
J.R. Baril of Haverhill, MA started on the pole in the Super
Late Model feature event, with veteran Eric Hudson lined up on
the outside. Baril busted right out to the lead when flagman
Mike Walker unfurled the green, with Hudson hot on his heels.
The duo quickly pulled away from the rest of the field, and it
soon became apparent they were off to decide this one between
themselves. Hudson got to Baril’s bumper more than once, but he
didn’t have enough to get by.
Baril went the distance to pick up the win, with Hudson right in
his tire tracks to score the runner-up. Multi-time champion
Bobby Gahan was doing double duty for the night, and his third
place run in the Super Late Models was the highlight of his
night. Jimmy Renfrew collected fourth place honors, with Rich
Eaton closing out the top five.
George Baldwin led the way when the Super Streets headed to the
green, and that’s pretty much the way it stayed for the duration
of the 30-lap main event. Baldwin gained the advantage over Lee
Weldy on the start and moved out to the lead, with Sandy Lee
quickly moving up to join the lead battle.
Lee slipped past teammate Weldy to take over the second spot,
but there was nothing he could do to stop Baldwin, who went wire
to wire to score the win. Lee held on to finish second in the
Jim Daley entry, with teammate Weldy, Chuck Dehney, Russ
Douphinette, Joey Ventrillo, Nick Gravel, Tony Carroll, Keith
Walton and Neil Kelly the rest of the top ten.
Heat winners Rick Woodside, Jr. and Steve Douphinette battled
hard for the lead when the Strictly Stock feature went green,
with Woodside gaining the upper hand to set the pace.
Approaching halfway, Woodside’s ride slowed and he headed to the
pits, leaving the lead to Douphinette.
Douphinette survived a late-race scare when he spun in some
fluid left on the track by Ken McIlvaine, but the caution saved
him, and he remained in the lead. Douphinette had clear sailing
from there, and he went on to score the win over Gary
Beauregard, Stephen Dubois, Mike Williams, and Jarod Mountain.
There was plenty of action in the Fast 4 feature, and when the
smoke cleared, it was young Shaun Waites, Jr. sitting in victory
lane. Waites won a race-long duel with Timmy Johnson to grab the
checkers, with Jesse Tellier, Jeff James and Jim Deveau next
across the stripe.

Epping, NH – All-Star Speedway opened up the 2008 campaign with
the running of the Epping Ice Melt, with Enduros and an
extra-payoff Strictly Stock race taking center stage for the
night’s festivities.
In addition, several Super Street competitors who were on hand
for practice during he afternoon stuck around and had a special
grudge match, with Team Daley driver Sandy Lee coming out on top
of that one.
Lee Weldy came up in the late laps to checker second, with 2007
Strictly Stock champion “Rocket Rob” MacRae taking third ahead
of Russ Douphinette.
In the Strictly Stocks, it was Jim Russell and Mike Asselin
leading the field around to the green, with Russell moving out
to the early lead. Steve Douphinette made quick work of Russell
to take over the top spot, with the action hot and heavy behind
battling for second.
While Douphinette pulled away from the pack, Chuck Dehney was
the man on the move, coming from scratch on the field to contend
just after halfway. After a tough battle to take over second, he
cleared the pack and headed off after Douphinette.
Dehney finally caught Douphinette at the white flag, and he
ducked underneath looking for the lead. The pair circled the
quarter-mile door handle to door handle for the final lap, with
Dehney inching ahead to score the win by less than a fender.
Douphinette took a well-deserved runner-up, with Rick Woodside,
Jr., Mike Williams, Russell, Corrie Merritt and Jarod Mountain
next across the stripe.
Patrick Sheehan had a strong run to dominate the 4-cylinder
action, with Jeff James and Timmy Johnson next across the line.
Ed Flannigan held off 2007 Howler winner Brian DeStefano to win
the 8-cylinder race, while Niko Maniatis grabbed the one-on-one
drags.

SPONSORS BIG BLOCK SUPERMODIFIEDS AT ALL-STAR SPEEDWAY
EPPING,
NH- The Big Block Supermodifieds were once a staple of weekly
short track racing in the state of New Hampshire. In recent
years they have had few races in the Granite State, despite the
fact that they have been drawing capacity crowds to each event.
By popular demand, the fastest short track cars in America will
return to All-Star Speedway in Epping for a seven race series in
2008, starting with an event on May 3rd. The return of the
Supermodifieds was largely made possible by the efforts of track
owner Bobby MacArthur, aided by a sponsorship deal from
WaterSnoGo, a division of M-O-H Enterprises Inc.
MacArthur stated, "I think this is a good way of bringing back
racing to the way it used to be in New England. We are looking
forward to our involvement with WaterSnoGo and Laticrete for the
present and future of All-Star Speedway."
WaterSnoGo has agreed to sponsor the entire seven race series,
titled the 'WaterSnoGo Big Block Super Series'. Each event will
consist of qualifying heat races and a 50-lap Feature paying
$2,500 to the winner, and $300 to start.
In addition to that, WaterSnoGo, along with Hoosier Tire East
has graciously agreed to sponsor a point fund for the new
series. Many of the elite teams have expressed their plans to
compete at All-Star Speedway.
Names such as Chris Perley, Russ Wood, Jon McKennedy, Joe Petro
and Mike Ordway Jr. are among the expected entries. In fact,
with the first WaterSnoGo event taking place on May 3, a number
of ISMA regulars are expected to compete.
WaterSnoGo is an Indoor-Outdoor Theme Park Franchise spearheaded
by Mark O Hildonen, a Four-Time Wheel Standing Funny Car Drag
Racing Champion.
Hildonen is currently on a national exhibition tour that will
make frequent stops at All-Star Speedway for these big events.
Current development plans are to open 10 to 14 facilities over
the next four to eight years. Among those will be a new location
in the Central New England area.
These facilities will include a 262-foot high, 1,200 foot long
indoor snow mountain with ski slopes and a snowboarding park.
There will be multiple indoor/outdoor water activities, sporting
events and performance area, along with retail space and
accommodations. Each of these newly developed sites will cover
52 acres of land.
Hildonen plans to be at the May 3 event at All-Star with his
exhibit, which will include his Wheel Standing Funny Car,
Dancing WS Go Go Girls, promotional material and merchandising.
Hildonen, better known in the drag racing world as 'Mad Man
Marko' has been involved in drag racing his entire life. He
competed in drag cars for sixteen years, so it was only natural
for him to bring auto racing into his new venture, the
WaterSnoGo Franchise. His new involvement with the Big Block
Supermodifieds is an extension of his passion for auto racing.
"Racing has always been in my blood," he enthusiastically stated
when asked how he became involved with this new seven race
series.
Hildonen has also reached an agreement recently to be a title
sponsor of the four race series and point fund for the newly
named, 'WaterSnoGo All-Star Modified Showdown Series" as well,
further increasing his involvement with the sport he loves. This
is in addition to the involvement of Laticrete International as
a major race sponsor of the May 10 Modified Thunder 150.
The Big Block Supermodifieds return to All-Star Speedway in
2008, with support from WaterSnoGo, is expected to bring fans
some of the best racing that any track will offer this season.
With the popularity of the Supermodifieds, and the proven record
of good racing at the Epping facility, All-Star Speedway will
once again be the track leading the way with some of the best
weekly short track racing in the country in 2008.

Batchelder and Jon McKennedy are among those that have already
stated their intentions to compete in the May 10 event.
The 150-lap race will pay $5,000 to the winner. Lap money will
be added, as laps will be sold at $50 per lap, starting on
February 29 at the Sunoco Speedway EXPO 2008, All-Star Speedway
booth. Laps may be purchased after March 2nd by contacting the
speedway. There will also be a sponsored halfway bonus for the
leader at the lap 75 break. A point fund for the four race
series will add an additional $20,000 in payouts as well.
The 2007 version of this event has been remembered as one of the
best pavement Modified events of that entire season. With the
addition of new entrants, a point fund, and the sponsorship of
Laticrete, there is no doubt that the 2nd Annual Laticrete
Modified Thunder on May 10 at All-Star Speedway will be one of
the most exciting events of 2008 for the pavement Modified
division. |
