Epping, NH – The
chase for the 2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
championship continued on Saturday night for the All-Star
Modifieds, and once again it was points leader Louie
Mechalides picking up the win in the 40-lap main event. After grabbing a heat win earlier in the
evening, Brandee Tree picked right up where she had left off
in the feature event, running out from the pole to establish
herself as the early leader.
Luke Royea and Rusty Ball battled for second behind
Tree, who was clicking off some fast laps out front. The first ten laps were in the record
books in short order, with Tree continuing to lead over
Royea, Ball, Mike Murphy, and Bruce Batchelder, but
Mechalides was already up to sixth and looking for more. On lap 13, caution was on the field for a
spin by Mike Ordway, Jr., and Mechalides sat fifth for the
restart. He
knocked off a couple of cars when the action resumed, and on
lap 15, he ducked underneath Ball to take the second spot. Tree remained on the point at halfway,
with Mechalides now challenging for the lead.
Bobby Gahan, Ball, and rookie Jacob Dore had moved up
to fill out the top five.
Two laps later, Mechalides’ charge to front was
complete, as he outbraked Tree heading into turn one and
came away with the lead. Mechalides was in control from there,
storming to his sixth feature win of the year, and
strengthening his hold on the points lead.
Gahan scored runner-up honors, followed by Tree,
Murphy, Dore, Batchelder, Ball, Eric LeClair, Ordway, and
Sumner Scott. The Super Late Models had a special
50-lap feature event on the schedule, with rookie contender
Ron Bolduc taking his first-ever win aboard the David’s Race
Cars entry.
Bolduc broke to the lead early, with Jay Sands applying
heavy pressure for the first ten laps. Multi-time feature winner and current
points leader J.R. Baril soon joined the lead battle, but
there was nothing he could do to stop Bolduc, who led every
lap on his way to victory.
Baril took second place honors, with Jeff Crowley,
Sands, and Jimmy Rosenfield rounding out the top five. The Super Streets had a first-time winner
in their 30-lap feature event, as the popular Shaun Waites,
Sr. picked up his first-ever Super Street checker in the
caution-free event.
The streeters ran clean and green from start to
finish in just over seven minutes, with Waites out front all
the way. Tony Carroll was right with Waites all
the way, but he couldn’t pull alongside to challenge for the
top spot, and had to settle for a runner-up finish.
Russ Douphinette,
Timmy Casey, Sandy Lee, Chris Lee, Lee Weldy, Nick Gravel,
Rob DeAlmeida, and Phil Baril were the rest of the top ten. Ken McIlvaine and Stephen Dubois moved to
the front when flagman Mike Walker let the Strictly Stocks
loose, taking over the top two spots quickly. Points leader Steve Douphinette was an
early casualty in the event, dropping out when his left rear
axle let go and left him three wheeling during an early
caution period. Rick Woodside, Jr. was quickly up from
ninth on the starting grid to challenge, and by lap ten; he
had the whole field in his rear view mirror.
At halfway, Art Joslin and Gary Beauregard were
side-by-side just inches off Woodside’s back bumper, but
that’s as close as they got. Woodside held on the rest of the way to
pick up the win, with Beauregard, Joslin, McIlvaine, Chris
Augevich, Mike Williams, Jared Mountain, Dubois, John
Jimson, and Johnny Gervais the rest of the top ten
finishers. Jef James busted out of the pack to take
the lead when the Fast-4 feature went green, but he quickly
lost the spot to point leader Jim Deveau, who held on to the
top spot until lap seven, when Shaun Waites, Jr. made his
move. Waites swept past into the lead, with
Deveau, Tyler Mailhut, Matt Magee, and Jesse Tellier moving
up to fill out the top five at halfway.
Waites was unbeatable the rest of the way, pulling
out to a half-straightaway lead by the time the checkers
flew.
